The capital of Republic of Lithuania located in the south of the country, near the Polish and Belorussian border. It has about 600,000 inhabitants. Vilnius is the main Lithuanian economic, cultural and scientific centre. There are machine, electromechanical, metal, textile, food and building industry. The city is a tourist attraction. It has one of the biggest Old Towns in Europe, at present carefully restored.
Lodz signed the agreement on co-operation with Vilnius on 22nd January, 1991. In the period between 1993-1995 we had our diplomatic office at 7, Pilies Street, yet we did away with it because of the increasing costs of maintaining of the office. The Lodz Municipal Office is in close contact with the Vilnius Municipal Office. Our co-operation concentrates on tourism and historical monuments restoration. Every year Vilnius participated in the International Tourist Fair in Lodz. And the other way, Lodz is invited to the tourist fair in Vilnius.
The universities of both cities have been in co-operation for the last four years.
